Pets with Wings (PWW) was started by Leslie Hurd and Rhea Vasconcellos in 2012 when they saw a need to provide good homes and new lives for some of the island’s neediest animals.  Although many find wonderful homes here, there not enough adopters for the volume of homeless animals on island. ​

THE GOAL OF PETS WITH WINGS:

​To transport as many homeless animals as possible from the Humane Society of STT and the surrounding communities to rescue groups, shelters and potential adopters on the U.S. mainland where there are shortages of adoptable pets.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:

​All animals accepted to be transported are evaluated for health and temperament. When a traveler is identified, contact is made with the stateside rescue in that area to identify the animal (dog or cat) that is suitable for that partner rescue or in some cases a private adopter. The animal is then transported stateside either in cargo or in cabin with a ticketed passenger. Anyone traveling to one of our partner cities – can accompany an animal as a “travel volunteer.”

 

The process is an entirely stress-free. The Pets with Wings team complete the necessary travel paperwork and pay the airline fee. Donations to help cover the travel expense is happily accepted. The PWW team member will add the furry travel companion to the flight reservation, will meet “you, the traveler” at the airport check-in counter with the animal and assist with the check-in process. The "traveler" accompanies the animal through US Customs and TSA. You will be given a pet travel kit with necessary information and supplies for the pet. When you arrive at your final destination, a representative from our rescue partner or adopter will meet the traveler to take possession of the pet. With your permission, you and your furry companion's travel adventure will posted on the PWW Facebook page.

 

There is seldom a dry eye at this moment of parting, but each “traveler” leaves with a full heart, knowing another innocent life is destined for a loving home and a promising future.
